New Year’s Deep Cleaning Tips For A Fresh Start + Free Checklist

It’s hard to believe that New Year’s Eve is a couple of days away. Just in time for a nice and complete deep clean of your home.

For me, deep cleaning for a new year is not only therapeutic, but it’s also a great way to start the next year with a fresh start.

Every year, I always make sure to tackle certain chores that I usually ignore throughout the year. Like cleaning the dishwasher or the air vents.

In this post I will also share my favorite cleaning products, a free checklist with a ton of ideas of what you should clean at home, and tips to welcome a new year with a clean home.

Best Cleaning Products

Even though having a clean home is the best feeling in the world, cleaning… is not so fun most of the time.

But when you have the right tools, it’s a game changer. Especially when you deep clean your home for the new year.

These are my favorite cleaning products:

  • Scrub Daddy
This product is 100% worth the hype. At first it was difficult to get used to the shape, but I simply love it now. Worth every penny.
  • Scrub Daddy PowerPaste
I saw a girl cleaning her glass shower with this product to get rid of the hard hard and I had to give it a try. It work amazingly!
I also use it to clean my electric stove, oven glass, pots and pans.
  • Lysol Lemon All Purpose Cleaner & Disinfectant
I use this all purpose cleaner to clean the countertops in my kitchen. I absolutely love the citrus scent of this product as well.
Works great when I want to disinfect different surfaces.
  • Sprayway Glass Cleaner
This has to be the best glass cleaner hands down. I currently have a glass dining table and this is the only product that actually works well.
I also spray this product on my shower glass after getting rid of the hard water stains. Good for mirrors as well!
  • Clorox Ultra Comfort Gloves
Even though they are more expensive than others, these are amazing gloves! I have a pair for cleaning the bathrooms and another one for the kitchen.
They feel very soft inside and they don’t roll down while using them (which was an issue with other gloves).
The only thing I hate about these cleaning gloves is the fact that they stain super easily. If you make spaghetti for dinner, just know the fingertips of the gloves will be orange after washing the dishes. I wish they had more colors available.

New Year’s Cleaning Superstitions

Even though having a clean home ready for the New Year it’s a great way to start your year on the right foot, there are some things you should avoid (or do) before and during January 1st.

It will also depend on where are you from. These superstitions can change depending on the culture. Just follow the ones that make sense to you; because if you read about the different traditions, you will see that sometimes they contradict themselves and it can be overwhelming.

I also think that if enough people believe in something, it can become a reality, just like manifesting for your personal life. Collective manifestations are also a thing (but that’s a conversation for another post).

These are my favorite New Year’s superstition related to cleaning and decluttering:

  • Sweeping on New Year’s Day, brings bad luck.
So instead of freaking out about how messy it looks after your New Year’s Eve dinner, just relax and think about it on January 2nd. Although, it’s not clear if vacuuming will have the same effect.
  • Before your New Year’s Eve celebrations, make sure there are no dirty clothes or bedding at home.
If your laundry is fresh and clean, the new year will be bright and full of good luck. Clean sheets on New Year’s can also bring a fresh start to your love life.
This is something my mom has been doing since I’m little, and it’s a tradition that I will keep in my home.

New Year’s Deep Cleaning Tips

Even though most New Year’s traditions talk about cleaning on New Year’s Eve, deep cleaning can be a tasks that can take even a week.

So don’t feel like you need to rush to get everything done in one day. The idea is to also enjoy the cleaning and take it a fresh start.

Schedule Your Taks

The best thing you can do, is to read the full New Year’s cleaning checklist, and create a schedule for the tasks you need to on each day.

For example: since cleaning vents and the dishwasher doesn’t requiere a whole day, so I would start with those tasks.

You can also schedule your tasks by area. The first day you can do your room, the next one the bathroom, etc.

Declutter Your Home First

Decluttering your home is a task that you should do before start cleaning. That way you will have more space to organize your things, and cleaning will come easier since there will be less things around.

Since I moved to my new apartment not so long ago, this year I’m focusing on finding a place for those things that I still have in boxes.

I’m ordering a couple of things from Amazon that will help me organize my home in a better way. For example, getting some cable management tools.

Invoke your inner Marie Kondo, and ask yourself if whatever you have brings you joy or has a purpose.

Repair Old Items

This is a great opportunity to tackle those tasks that you have been putting off, like repairing chipped furniture or painting a door or small spaces that need some love.

That being said, take this opportunity to rethink everything you own. Getting a new sofa or bed might be a big investment, but it might be time to get a new one.

I a great believer in giving life to old objects, but sometimes you just have to let them go.

Organize Your Home

Sometimes, when we move to a new space, we don’t really think through where we are storing our stuff; but it’s important we find a good place to put them.

A great thing to do before the new year is to organize your closet and drawers. This can be part of your decluttering process.

Buy New Cleaning Products

Now, I’m all about using any products until the last drop, but take this opportunity to make a list of new products you might want or need for certain chores.

For example: getting a new cleaning sponge or microfiber cloth.

I also go through TikTok videos and see what others use to clean, this give me ideas of future cleaning products I might need. Like getting a long brush for those small areas in your shower.

New Year’s Deep Cleaning Checklist

When the cleaning bug gets me, I get very intense. I even clean things that I would usually not think about, like my cleaning supplies caddy.
