11 New Year’s Traditions To Have The Best Year Ever

Hello, lovelies! Can you believe we are a few days away from 2020? How do you feel about that? Next year is going to be full of changes and I’m a little nervous about that. That’s why I wanted to share some of the New Year’s traditions I do every year, so I can start the 2020 with the right foot.

I know these traditions can sound stupid for many, and maybe it is. But in the end, it’s all about the magic of starting a new year. A new beginning and a fresh start.

New Year’s Traditions

1. Underwear

The first thing I make sure to have on New Year’s Eve is a new pair of underwear. For me is key to start the New Year with new clothes and this item is something that you can’t forget.

When choosing which one will be the best for you, you will want to think about the color. Each color gives you a different benefit. This is for sure one of my favorite New Year’s traditions, and the one I always make sure to do even if I don’t do anything big.

Yellow: It’s the most classic color. Why? Because it represents energy, movement, happiness, wealth and success. And everyone wants that for a new year, right? I certainly do!

White: If you want a year full of peace, calm, harmony and happiness, make sure to wear this color. It’s great if you want to leave behind the stress in your life.

Orange: This color brings excitement and desire to your life. This is the perfect color for you if you want to change your mood (be more positive) and achieve your goals.

Pink: This color reflects romance, femininity, elegance, and innocence. So this is perfect if you are looking to find love next year. It also helps to dissipate the arguments in couples that had a rough year.

Red: It means passion, love, and desire. It also means strength, excitement, and life. This color for sure means passions, so if you are looking that next year make sure pick red underwear!

Purple: Are you looking for more spirituality this new year? Then this color is perfect for you! Not only helps you with that but also brings prosperity to your life.

Blue: This color symbolize serenity and good health (especially physical health). If you are starting a new business this is a great color to wear too, it helps you to be more rational and separate your feelings from your thoughts.

Black: It represents luxury and dignity. Overall you can choose this color if you want to avoid bad energies or from things that want to harm us.

Green: Symbolize hope, life and well being. It helps you with personal growls and if you want to have more contact with nature. This color is perfect for you.

2. Put Money In Your Shoes Or Pockets

In South America we are in summer during the holidays, putting a bill on my sandal is not a good idea since I will end up losing it. So if I’m wearing a dress with no pockets I would leave a bill secure in my bra or something similar. The point is to start the year with some money on you, this will bring prosperity to you all year long.

3. The First Hug Of The New Year

If you want to attract love for the new year, the first hug you give after the clock hit 12 AM, has to be of the sex you want to attract. Before starting my relationship with my boyfriend I always made sure to hug my dad, an uncle or a cousin first.

4. Throw Water

During the last minutes of the year. Grab a glass of water (or something else) and throw the water out of the window or door, that way you will be throwing away all the negative energies that were in your house so you can start the year with a clean home.

5. Eat 12 Grapes

This is my second favorite New Year’s traditions! So how does this work? This is what you have to do. When midnight arrives, make sure to have 12 grapes near you. Each grape represents a month of the year. So when you eat one, while you are chewing, make a wish or think about a goal you want to achieve that month.

6. Walk Around The Block

Do you want to travel more? You have to do this! Once the clock hits 12 AM. Pick a suitcase (or any type of bag) and go around the block. Or around anything you can. The point is that, by doing this, it means you are traveling around the world and it will bring you more opportunities to travel.

I come from a family that knows the importance of traveling and discovering new places. So this is always a must every year! We want to attract all the opportunities to travel we can. We never plan our trips, we just take them as they come.

7. Burn The Bad Of The Year

In countries like in Peru, is common to do it. You have two options. The first is the easiest way. On a sheet of paper, write all the bad things that happened in the past year and what you want to leave behind. You know, like situations and people. Once you do it, burn it! And say goodbye to those bad experiences.

Another way to do it (and this is very common in some countries of South America) is to make a “doll” with old clothes. Some people even make the doll look like some politicians (we all know they are not very popular) or negative personalities of the year. This doll represents the bad of the year and the idea of getting rid of all of that.

8. Put A Gold Ring In Your Champagne Glass

My mom loves this New Year’s traditions, and she always makes sure to never miss it. Once you have your glass of champagne with you, drop a gold ring in your glass and drink it. This, like the money on your shoes, will bring prosperity all year long and money won’t be an issue. It’s always good to give it a try!

9. Start The Year With The Right Foot

To go in the right direction this new year, right after the clock hits 12 AM, step on with your right foot with force. That way, you will have a year free of obstacles and everything will go as you planned.

I’m totally doing this, this year!

10. Sweep Your House

Grab your broom and start sweeping from the inside to the outside. This will throw away negative vibes and will allow the entrance of good energies. It’s a way to clean your house on a spiritual level.

11. Candles

We all love candles! And they are very important in New Year’s traditions and rituals. My mom always makes a centerpiece with many candles of different colors. Light the candles before eating dinner, and leave them like that all night long if it’s possible. Just like the underwear, different colors have different meanings.

BONUS: If You Are At The Beach, Do This!

There are many traditions you can do while you are on the beach celebrating the new year. Most of these traditions come from Brazil. They do some really fun rituals! For example, dress all in white to absorb all the good vibes. White is the color of purity and renovation. Also, at midnight, go to the ocean and jump the first seven waves that come your way. The ocean is associated with cleansing in many cultures. So that’s the point of doing it!

  1. Oh my gosh, this post is so fun! I’m going to have to incorporate some of this into our NYE celebration next year. I went to a friend’s house for NYE this year and she is from Cuba, so we had Cuban food and salsa dancing. It was so fun.

  2. I love this post! I will definitely have to give these a try next year! I used to go out and watch fireworks for most New Years, but I think it’s time to try new things! 🙂

I do a ton of these, you should see me trying to get the grapes in on time, burn the paper with the old stuff, stomp on the floor, throw water out the window, and run out the house with my luggage and money stuffed in my bra, everyone thinks I am nuts! I wish I lived by the beach I would totally jump the seven waves too! 🙂
